St. Peter's Basilica is an active place of worship. Please respect these rules.

Dress Code

Strict dress code enforced: shoulders and knees must be covered for both men and women. No shorts, miniskirts, sleeveless tops, or revealing clothing. Men must remove hats inside the basilica. Bring a scarf or shawl if in doubt.

Photography Rules

Photography is permitted but flash photography and tripods are strictly prohibited. Video recording is allowed for personal use only. Be mindful of other visitors and worshippers when taking photos.

Security Screening

All visitors must pass through airport-style security with metal detectors and bag screening. Large bags, backpacks, and sharp objects are not permitted. Allow extra time for the security queue, especially during peak hours.

Behaviour & Conduct

Silence is requested throughout the basilica as it is an active place of worship. No eating or drinking inside. Mobile phones must be on silent. Refrain from touching artworks and monuments. Follow staff directions at all times.

What happens if I don't meet the dress code?
You will be denied entry. There are no coverings provided at the entrance. Vendors near St. Peter's Square sell scarves and shawls, but it's best to come prepared. Even in hot summer weather, the dress code is strictly enforced.
Can I bring a water bottle inside?
Yes, you can bring a sealed water bottle through security. However, eating and drinking inside the basilica is not permitted. There are fountains in St. Peter's Square where you can refill your bottle before or after your visit. You can find more info on our food and drinks page.
Are selfie sticks allowed?
Selfie sticks are generally not permitted inside the basilica. They may be confiscated at the security checkpoint. Standard handheld photography with phones and cameras is allowed, just without flash or tripods.
Can I attend Mass as a tourist?
Yes, Masses are open to everyone regardless of faith. However, during Mass certain areas of the basilica are reserved for worshippers, and tourist access may be restricted. Mass schedules are posted at the entrance and on the Vatican website.
